Oatmeal Cookies and an award too!

I was talking to my mom on the phone the other day and she asked me what I was doing, I said "baking cookies".....her response, "you bake a lot".   Um...ok, so I bake 2-3 times a week,  it's one way I show love to my little family.  Is this excessive??  Please tell me how often you bake for your family.  By the way, my mom wasn't being mean, she's far too sweet for that!

WARNING:  These cookies WILL make you fat....because you CANNOT stop at one.  Atleast I know I can't and numerous friends and my SIL have confessed they can't either.

Oatmeal Cookies (adapted slightly from Favorites cookbook)

1 C. Butter
1 C. Sugar
1 C. Brown Sugar
2 Eggs
2 tsp Vanilla
1 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp Baking Powder
2 tsp Baking Soda
2 1/4 C. Flour
2 C. Oats
1 package Semi-Sweet Morsels

Cream together butter and sugars. Add eggs and vanilla and mix well.  Add salt, soda, powder, flour and mix just until combined.  Add oats and morsels and mix with a wooden spoon.  Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes (I do 10 mins.)  Enjoy with milk!

Now on to the award,  I'm honored to receive the Liebster Award from Shannon over at Sew Sweet Cottage, thanks my sweet friend!  Her blog is a collaboration of DIY projects and creative parties, check her out!

I am passing the award on to some other fabulous blogs, check them out!

  6. I bake usually 2-3 times a month...sometimes more sometimes less. But I cook homemade meals at least 4-5 times a week now so that's where my time is spent. I have an oatmeal cookie recipe where you grind the oatmeal up and it's sooo good. I miss you sisters. We need to get Karen and go on a girls trip. Can we ever make that happen?!?

Thanks for Kudos! I love to write ... its therapy and a blessing. The cookies you made look scrumptious ... I made the Gorilla Cookies http://simplesacred.blogspot.com/2012/02/how-to-stare-down-gorilla.html and they were a hit! I only was able to eat two ... Curt lied and said he ate only two ... but for some reason its hard for me to believe this! Tomorrow my nephew and I are going to make MORE with dark choco... we'll bring you guys some!

Thanks again for the the Liebster Blog Award ... I passed it on!

YOU make living at Daybreak WORTH IT! Hugs!

  9. Is there a high altitude recipe for this? My cookies are flat as well :-(

  10. My recipe is almost exactly the same. I only put in 1 C oats, but i also put in 1 C shredded coconut. You should try it! Yum! :)

  11. I live in Utah which has a higher altitude and mine never turn out flat....now if I am making just chocolate chip cookies, they are ALWAYS flat so that's why I always add in oats. I found this tip:

Cookies: Most recipes perform well, but if not, the following slight adjustments may be made: Slight increase in baking temperature, liquids, and flour; slight decrease in baking powder or baking soda, fat, and/or sugar.

The Kenyons, my grandmother has a great oatmeal cookie recipe that has cococut in it and I loved it growing up. I'll have to try your version, thanks!

  13. I recently found this on Pinterest in my pursuit of a good oatmeal cookie recipe. I'm excited to try. I have my small family as well as the hubs' fire dept. as guinea pigs.
I used to bake at least 4 times a week, but that included homemade bread. If baking ingredients (real butter) hadn't gotten so expensive lately, I'd bake more often.

  14. I also found this recipe looking on pinterest for an oatmeal cookie recipe! I can't wait to try it! I go through spurts on the baking thing. At least once a week I'm baking cookies . . . this week I'm on round 3 or so thanks to wanting to bring treats to church, making cookies for family in town, and of course treats for a birthday party!

Can you tell me where you got your I Am a Mormon button? I really like it and would love to put it up on my blog, unless it's a personal creation that can't be shared.

    Thanks!

  18. Found your recipe on Pinterest. I live at 5600ish feet elevation and these cookies were totally flat for me. However, once I added a 1/4 cup extra flour and turned my oven to 360 they were fabulous. Just thought I would pass that on. Thanks!

  22. Thank you to whoever pinned this on Pinterest. These cookies are amazing, I just made a half batch and I should have made the full batch, as these will not last long in my home. My half batch produced 2-1/2 dozen cookies (I used one of those generous scoops that perfect the cookie). My cookies did not flatten they actually look exacly like the picture posted. I did not have quick oats, so I just used the Quaker original oats. This will now be my go to oatmeal cookie. Thank you for sharing this recipe!

  23. Haha. Came across your blog via pinterest. When I read your mom's comment the first thought that came to mind was "That sounds like my mom." haha. I love to bake too. And I probably would too if I wasn't trying to instill healthier eating habbits in my kids and family. But I can't wait to try these. I love oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.

  24. Do I use softened or melted butter? Also could I use cinnamon in these? Thanks

    1. I added a bit of cinnamon and they tasted amazing! Probably about 1/2 tsp per batch. It adds just a hint of spice that makes them perfect for Christmas. At least, that's what I think. {:

  32. Is the recipe correct? Mine are flat like pancakes!

  33. I'm out of butter, will margarine work?

  34. I have made these cookies minus the oatmeal and they are by far the best chocolate chip cookies I have ever made!

  35. Try adding a box of instant pudding ILO 1/2 cup of white sugar. I alway bake two test cookies if they go flat add a little more flour. The pudding helps to keep the cookie from flattening also. I baked at 7000 ft and this recipe worked with pudding.

  36. You may have won an award but how about learning how to write a recipe...how big should the cookie be...a teaspoon, tablespoon of dough? A greased cookie sheet? One can only guess!!

    1. Along with size, how about you set a new trend among bloggers and let us know how many we can expect to get out of the recipe? I bake for my church and recipes that don't allow me to calculate whether I need a single or double batch leave me infuriated.

    2. I made large cookies, heaping tablespoons of dough, and got 36 coookies out of this recipe.

  37. THIS IS IT! My new, go-to cookie recipe. OMG they are good! My husband does not really like sweets but he LOVED these cookies. They are the perfect combination of crunchy and chewy, sweet and because I added some peanut butter chips, a little saltiness, too. The only variation I made was in the chips. I added about 3/4 bag of mixed chocolate chips and 1/4 bag of Reeses peanut butter chips. Baked at 345 degrees on Convection Bake and they took about 18 minutes to very lightly brown to a golden color. The next day, they are JUST AS GOOD! Kept in a plastic rubbermaid container on the counter. At the rate they are going, they won't last another day between the 3 of us. I did take care to thoroughly cream the butter & sugar at the beginning, until it got fluffy (past the pasty stage) and everything was at solid room temperature, including the eggs. I will keep this recipe forever and it looks like an easy one to memorize - lots of 2s and 1s. Thank you for sharing this recipe! I think. Looks like I'm going to have to do extra steps to make up for all the calories!
